Cymru a Gogledd-Orllewin Lloegr/Wales and North-West England
The Viking Congress is an international, interdisciplinary, academic conference on the Viking Age, which began in 1950, and meets every four years. 2021 will be the first time that Wales leads a Viking Congress, and the first time it has taken place in either Wales or north-west England.
The 19th Viking Congress will take place 23-29 July 2022, with the Congress Tour on 29 July – 2 August 2022.
The programme of open lectures and delegate papers will begin at Prifysgol Bangor/Bangor University in north-west Wales on the evening of Saturday 23 July, moving to Liverpool University on Tuesday 26 July. The Congress dinner will take place in Bangor. There will be two excursions by coach, one in north Wales to Ynys Môn/ Anglesey, and the other to Chester and Wirral on route from Bangor to Liverpool.
The Congress Tour will be based at Lancaster University, and linked with its Regional Heritage Centre. It will start from Liverpool University shortly after the end of the main Congress sessions on 29 July, and will finish in Lancaster on 1 August. The tour will take place in the counties of Cumbria and Lancashire, known for their spectacular landscapes, including the Lake District National Park, and strong Viking-Age associations. It will involve site visits, interpretation and public engagement, including one public lecture.
